Enter Sogmarsh

The weather will not improve for you, and the roads may return you to where you began. Everything the parish has managed to keep dry is shelved inside.

Keep going. It is not far, and it is wetter than it looks

What you are walking into

Half the ground
is only a rumour

Sogmarsh is bog, granite, and a great deal of paperwork about both. The dry part is contested. The wet part is not, because nobody wants it. Between the two runs the Fat Mile, which grows everything, and which nobody can agree the width of.

From the Committee's own survey

“The line will not hold still.”

The realm is measured every year by men who take a boat, a chain and a strong opinion, and who come home with a different answer each time. The books below are what the people who live there wrote while the measuring went on.

And here you are, out of the rain

The reading rooms

Two painted rooms hold the whole realm: one of books, one of pictures. Every spine on the shelf opens where it stands.
